One of my favourite parts of starting this business BY FAR has been meeting our retailers. I’ve always loved well curated brick and mortar shops and among my absolute favourites has to be Nineteen Ten. I was a fan long before well kept started so was over the moon when Jenn and Amy agreed to carry our products. They were our very first retailer! Their taste is impeccable and I always leave their space totally inspired. I also usually have a little something tucked in my purse that I didn’t know I absolutely needed until I’d stepped through their door.
They’ve answered any and all of our questions as we’ve grown and we are eternally grateful. Their knowledge and opinions have been invaluable. They were kind enough to answer a few more questions for us so that we could share their insights with all of you!
How did the two of you wind up opening your beautiful shop?
We met way back while working together as buyers at a homewares shop in Vancouver. We became good friends and over the years dreamt (and schemed) about owning a store together. Long story short, a decade or so later we were both ready to take the plunge.
What are the best & worst parts of owning your own store?
The best parts definitely out way the bad, so that is a good sign! Some of the best parts include being surrounded by beautiful, well made things that we get to choose, creating our own story as well as the continuous building of relationships with vendors and awesome customers. The worst part is the uncertainty of retail – there really isn’t a formula and it can be hard to trust your instincts.
Anything you wish you knew right from the get go? Lessons learned…?
When we started this journey, we got a lot of good advice, but unless you have opened a retail store before, nothing can really prepare you for what it really takes to create and maintain a sustainable business. There are lots of ups and downs, but one thing we can say for sure that learning how to balance our personal/family life with shop life while supporting each other as equal business partners has been a big one for us.
What are some misconceptions you feel exist about self care?
Jenn: Self-care doesn’t have to be complicated, expensive or even self-indulgent. It could be as simple as accomplishing something on your to-do list or spending time doing something that brings you joy. /
Amy: I agree with Jenn. Life is busy and it is a constant challenge just to slow down and take care of ourselves. Realizing that you need a moment or a break from whatever is going on can be the best self care.
Any products you’re loving right now?
Is it a cop out to say we love all the self-care products we carry? Everything we decide to sell is tried by us first and if we love it, we introduce it to our customers. New products this year include well kept’s super sexy safety razor, which we both LOVE. We are also really loving all the new oil based products, like Wildcraft’s new Oil Wash and LOA oil, which is an amazing all purpose moisturizer.
