We’ve both been lucky enough to grow up close to the shores and on the waters. So to say that we both love the ocean would be an understatement. We try to sneak away to the beach every minute we can to dig our toes into the sand and watch as the tides change.
We’ve all been hearing the ever-increasing numbers about how much plastic is filling our oceans… Currently, it is estimated there are now 5.25 trillion pieces of ocean plastic debris, and a recent report estimates the quantity of plastic in the sea will triple by 2025*. It breaks our hearts to know how many birds and sea mammals are ingesting this plastic, and how it is destroying our ecosystems.
So we decided that this summer, whenever we are frequenting the beach (which will be a lot) we will do our part to #KeepTheBeachWellKept. For us, this means picking up 5-10 pieces, or more, of garbage that is washing up on our shores every time we are at the beach.
Another thing we want to be aware of is how to reduce the plastic and waste that we are bringing with us to the beach. This means thinking about the packaging of the food and drinks that we purchase – is it recyclable, compostable or is there an option to buy something similar without packaging.
We’d love for you to join us this summer and help to #KeepTheBeachWellKept
Tag your photos of your beach time or garbage pick ups throughout the summer and we will provide a giveaway every other week to those who are joining us in keeping our oceans, shorelines and parks clean.
