How to deep clean your safety razor

Your safety razor requires three types of maintenance: a quick clean every time you use it, a more thorough monthly clean, and an annual deep clean. I feel like deep clean is a bit of a misnomer here as it seems to imply a tough, time-consuming process—fear not! It’s really easy & quick!

Your safety razor requires three types of maintenance: a quick clean every time you use it, a more thorough monthly clean, and an annual deep clean. The timelines are rough estimates and totally depend on how often you use your razor and where you live (climate and water type make a difference!).

Cleaning your safety razor is important for several reasons:

hygiene  -  A safety razor collects hair, dead skin cells, and other debris during use. If not cleaned properly, these can accumulate and provide a breeding ground for bacteria, leading to infection or skin irritation.

performance  -   A buildup of debris can affect the performance of the razor. It can cause the blade to clog, making it difficult to get a close shave. Cleaning your razor ensures that it is functioning optimally.

longevity & appearance  -  Deep cleaning your razor can help prolong its lifespan & make sure it looks its best.

Spring has sprung which for me means that Spring cleaning is underway. I was busy deep cleaning my shower when I spotted my razor and was inspired to conduct its annual deep clean. I feel like deep clean is a bit of a misnomer here as it seems to imply a tough, time-consuming process—fear not! It’s really easy & quick!

DEEP CLEAN

1  /  Make up a cleaning solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water (you want to make sure your solution is highly diluted).

2  /  Take apart your razor and place all three pieces in your cleaning solution.

3  /  Let the pieces soak for ten minutes.

4  /  If a certain piece isn't coming up as clean as you’d like, you can create a paste with your cleaning solution and baking soda. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to work on the more stubborn build up.

5  /  Rinse all pieces in warm water & lay them out on a small towel.

6  /  Ensure all components dry completely before putting your safety razor back together.

That’s it! Easy! Taking the time to deep clean your safety razor will ensure optimal hygiene, performance, longevity, and appearance—a very worthwhile practice to adopt.
