6 Benefits of Bathing

In a world that demands so much of us, we owe it to ourselves to make time for those rituals that have a positive effect on both body and mind. We believe that being present, and deeply connecting with oneself is just as important (if not more) as getting that email sent out or deep-cleaning the kitchen. If you find it difficult to switch off, try to remember that contrary to what we've been told; rest and relaxation are productive, and you can't pour from an empty cup.

I think we can all agree that a relaxing soak nearly always leaves us feeling a little lighter, more at ease, and comforted in some way.

In a world that demands so much of us, we owe it to ourselves to make time for those rituals that have a positive effect on both body and mind. We believe that being present, and deeply connecting with oneself is just as important (arguably more) as getting that email sent out or deep-cleaning the kitchen. If you find it difficult to switch off, try to remember that contrary to what we've been told; rest and relaxation are productive and incredibly important to our physical and mental wellbeing.

Often, we feel like we don't have the time but know that just twenty minutes out of your week is all you need to create a bathing ritual to reset your energy. It's in these moments that we can fully recharge, returning to our day-to-day with more to give.

We encourage you to let go of the notion that bathing is purely indulgent as we explore some of the ways that regular baths can have on your overall wellbeing.

1 // creates intentionality

The act of preparing a bath is one that can't be hurried. The steps involved require you to be intentional and present.

These are the moments that we all need more of in our day-to-day; screen-free and undistracted.

A long soak is the dream but with even ten minutes in the tub, you've actively chosen to taken time for yourself and that's something to be proud of.

2 // combats stress & regulates mood

A hot bath provides the perfect escape from our everyday stressors; creating a private sanctuary. In that cozy bubble, with no outside distractions, our only choice is to focus on the here and now.

studies have shown that taking a bath can actually activate our parasympathetic nervous system and lower cortisol which brings our stress levels down and allows our bodies to enter a state of relaxation. The feeling of the warm water also encourages the body to release neurotransmitters like serotonin, which contribute to feelings of contentment and wellbeing.

If you have trouble turning off your brain, try to take deep breaths and focus on the sensation of the inhale and exhale.

3 // releases physical tension

Blood vessels expand in a hot bath, increasing blood flow to our muscles, helping them loosen and relax.

The physical benefits of bathing can also be supported with the use of salts and soaks. In our soaking salts, we use a combination of Himalayan and epsom salts which are rich in minerals and enhance the already relaxing experience.

4 // eases breathing + relieves cold symptoms

In peak cold and flu season, we look to our daily habits to see where we can boost our immune system. In addition to loading up on vitamin C, and eating plenty of whole nourishing foods, regular bathing could help prevent or ease the onset of cold symptoms.

When combined with essential oils, a hot bath can help to clear nasal passageways and effectively alleviate congestion. The steam from the water is super beneficial for loosening mucus and phlegm and allows you to take deeper, clearer breaths.

5 // nourishes skin

Running a bath might not be the first thing that comes to mind when your skin is in need of some TLC but at the right temperature, bathing can actually help improve the softness of skin.

To elevate the experience, we suggest adding a skin-softening bath milk or ultra-hydrating bath oil to naturally boost your skin's moisture levels. If you're prone to dry skin, eczema, psoriasis, or any other inflammatory skin condition you'll want to keep the water lukewarm and moisturize directly after bathing.

For fans of bubbles, choose a natural bubble bath with ingredients that are gentle on skin and avoid ingredients like laureth sulfate and cocamide EDTA which can cause dryness and irritation.

6 // helps aid restful, quality sleep

Taking a bath an hour or two before bed reduces your core temperature and signals your mind and body to wind down for sleep.

If you're someone who struggles to wind down or has a screen-heavy evening routine, it might be helpful to incorporate this ritual to disengage and invite relaxation. Beyond this, a pre-bed bath helps you to enter a deeper sleep quicker; the optimal state for our body and mind to recharge and regenerate.
