Tried and true, the safety razor is an excellent alternative to your disposable, plastic razor. It’s actually one of the simplest swaps you can make in your bathroom to cut down on your environmental footprint. In case you need more convincing, here’s why…

The grooming industry is massive and most products are made of plastic – with little choice in grooming tools most people opt for disposable razors. Unfortunately, this means over two billion plastic disposable razors are discarded annually in the US alone (according to the Environmental Protection Agency). 

If everyone in Vancouver discarded one plastic razor cartridge a week it would equate to approximately 2497 tonnes per year – that’s equivalent to 379 garbage trucks.

Why don’t we just recycle these plastic razors?
While some plastic is recyclable, most razor handles are made of single-use, non-biodegradable plastics that, due to their composition, can’t be broken down and recycled into reusable plastic.
In addition, the mix of metal and plastic in the blade cartridges makes this even more difficult to separate and recycle (if the plastic was indeed recyclable).

The worst part about plastic?
It will take a couple hundred years to break down into microfibers of plastic, but it will never fully degrade – leaving the plastic to spread into our ground, waterways, and contaminate our food systems.

Unlike disposable razors, safety razors are designed to last.
Since the razors themselves withstand a lifetime of use, only the blades need to be replaced and these blades are fully recyclable. They can easily be collected in a blade bank which can, once full, be recycled in its entirety.
